What I Loved in September

I love September. Back to school, cooler weather, fall foliage, hot tea, etc. 

This September I found some other things to love.

1. Barley Tea

This tea made from roasted barley is a great coffee replacement as it has a roasted, earthy, full-bodied flavor yet none of the caffeine. It can be enjoyed cold or hot and offers some health benefits. It has traditionally been used for detoxification. It also has antibacterial properties and is an antioxidant. 

I'm drinking some as I write this. It's the only decaf tea I've found that satisfies my coffee craving.

2. Parks and Recreation (TV Show)

I can't say enough good things about this show. It's smart, funny, tugs at your heart strings sometimes, and it's got a positive energy.


I realized that the shows I watch do affect my day to day brain functions. If I'm watching a series that is overly sad or negative, I'm subject to those feelings throughout the day. Not to say that some of those series aren't worth watching, but I really appreciate when a show can be so good while being generally happy.

The characters of Parks and Rec are well thought out, unique, and interesting. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler's character) is an intelligent and strongly motivated person who serves as a good role model while being hilarious.



If you like funny and smart TV, please try Parks and Recreation. 

An aside: Amy Poehler has an organization called "Amy Poehler's Smart Girls" of which the goal is to empower women and girls to spark change by being themselves. Amy Poehler for president!

Also just started her book "Yes Please." So far so funny.

3. Oatmeal

What's not to love about oatmeal? It's perfect for the cooler months as it's served warm. It's a healthy dish just as long as you don't load it up with junk.

I enjoy cinnamon, fruit, and some pure maple syrup in mine. It fills me up and keeps me energized until lunch. 

I'm reading and trying "The Starch Solution" by Dr. John McDougall. This really means that I'm eating mostly starch, veggies, and fruits. When I see some progress with my health situation I'll write about it. I can say that I really enjoy eating this way. 

4. Weekly Tea Dates with my Mom

I'm really trying to take advantage of this work schedule I have to help me spend time with people I love and also do work I love.

Every Wednesday I've been heading over to hang out with my mom before I go into work at 11. It's so nice to catch up each week, sit on the porch, and sip some tea. I'm lucky to live so close to her and have the means to get there each week. 

5. Positive Habit: Do The Most Important Thing First in Your Day

Similarly, I'm trying to maximize the amount of work I can do by doing this work first each day. 

I wake up, feed the pigs and cat, drink some water, meditate, journal, make breakfast, and then I sit down to work on my YouTube channel, blog, or other projects. 

I used to listen to podcasts and watch YouTube videos before doing this work. I had a hard time getting anything done in the time leftover and my focus just wasn't there.

Now, I do the work before putting on makeup, clothes, or consuming other's art/work. 

I'm getting so much done! And enjoying it!
