What I’m here to talk about today is how I’ve been able to create a life that I enjoy and that aligns with my values.
Of course life isn’t static and I’m still growing and changing and learning, but I’m happy to say I’m in a situation that is enjoyable that allows me to grow and change and explore in a way that aligns with my values.
Based on my experiences and those of others, I have come up with 6 steps for creating and maintaining a life that aligns with you.
For more than a year now I’ve been working on a tool to help me with these 6 steps.
I want to give you that tool today as a gift and hope that it helps you as well.
Before creating this tool, I was juggling a daily planner, “The Five Minute Journal,” a free form journal, and what I liked to call a life-planning binder that I created myself.
I was using these planners and journals to help me get my stuff together.
I wanted one tool or book to turn to to help me stay organized, focused, and mindful.
This has become the “Daily Intent Journal & Planner.”
I intend for this journal to eventually exist as a physical journal. I have received a sample which I designed however it still needs some work. You can see the sample above.
In the meantime, I thought I’d share what I have so far with whoever is interested as a free PDF.
If you’re interested in using this journal and planner, you can get it e-mailed to you by visiting www.likeminimal.com and entering your e-mail address in the pop-up box. You can also just click here to sign up. If you are already subscribed, you’ll receive an e-mail about how to get it.
This is what I use on a daily basis to plan my life, reflect, journal, express what I’m grateful for, take notes, meal plan, budget, and set goals and routines.
It is this tool that has helped me and continues to help me to move through the following six steps to creating a life aligned with who I am and what I want.
So, let’s get into the steps…
I will briefly touch on each step and create a separate more in-depth video for each step in addition. So stay tuned for those.
Six Steps to Creating and Maintaining a Life that Aligns with You
1.) Finding and Acknowledging Your Values - Values are things that everyone has, whether we’ve figured them out or not. Knowing our values is key to knowing what will make us most happy and satisfied in this life. Keep an eye out for a video about finding and acknowledging your values to see what questions we can answer to figure it out and how I figured out what mine were.
2.) Plan Your Life - I’m not sure it’s healthy to map out where we want to be specifically at a certain age in terms of societal norms and “milestones,” but having a general idea of where we want to go and what we want to do based on our values helps us to create a meaningful life. Check out the upcoming video on planning your life to see how I’ve planned mine using my journal.
3.) Set Goals - Creating goals aligned with our values helps us to make progress as long as we know ourselves and aren't creating so many goals and “deadlines” that it backfires and we become overwhelmed. Everyone is different and even if you don’t like deadlines or milestone markers attached to your goals, I think it’s useful to have an idea of the direction you're moving toward. Again, you'll soon see the video about creating goals for more information about mine and how Daily Intent Journal & Planner helps with this step.
4.) Create Routines - Having routines will help us live from our values on a daily basis. For me, this looks like having a morning routine devoted to personal growth and mental health. I also try to have a bit of an evening routine centered on relaxation but mostly fail. This leads me to steps 5 and 6. Don’t forget to check out the video about creating routines to find out more on this topic.
5. & 6.) Adjusting and Restructuring Your Life + Check in with Yourself Daily - These steps go hand in hand. Checking in with ourselves on a daily basis can look like meditation, journaling, and reflecting on the day. These tools help us to see how we’re doing, if we’re living from our values, if we’re working toward those goals, and if we need to make any changes to be happier or healthier. I think the point is to continuously grow and change and our daily actions, routines, and habits should reflect that. To see how the Daily Intent Journal & Planner helps us to reflect on and adjust our goals and routines, check out the video about just that, which will be up soon.
Like I said, if you want to get a free copy of a month’s worth of this journal and planner tool I have created, just enter your email address into the pop-up box at likeminimal.com and I’ll send it over to you. It will then be yours. Feel free to print it as many times as you’d like. If it’s something that you find to be useful I’d love to hear about it. I’d also love to hear about any suggestions you might have or how it could be more tailored to your lifestyle.
